PUW vs. WUE: Balancing Efficiency & Sustainability in Data Centers
April 8, 2025Every year on April 22, Earth Day serves as a global reminder of our responsibility to protect the environment. It’s a day for raising awareness, encouraging eco-friendly initiatives, and emphasizing the importance of reducing our carbon footprint.
As the world continues to prioritize sustainability, businesses across industries, including the cooling sector, must take active steps toward a greener future.
Earth Day in A Nutshell
Celebrated since 1970, Earth Day has grown into a powerful global movement dedicated to environmental protection. Each year, millions of people across the world come together to advocate for climate action, conservation, and sustainable practices, working to address the planet’s most urgent environmental challenges. Earth Day has become a symbol of collective action, encouraging individuals, organizations, and governments to take responsibility for the health of our planet.
How Does the Cooling Industry Prioritize Sustainability?
The Environmental Challenge of Cooling
Traditional air conditioners and refrigerants contain fluorinated gases that can leak, depleting the planet’s ozone layer and harming the environment. To put it into perspective, according to the National Renewable Energy Laboratory’s 2022 data, cooling contributes to 3.4% of global greenhouse gas emissions.
With that in mind, the cooling industry faces a critical challenge: delivering essential temperature control while reducing environmental impact. This challenge has become increasingly urgent as climate change and nature’s collapse dominate the top five long-term threats identified in the 2024 World Economic Forum’s Global Risks Report.
The International Energy Agency estimates that successfully implementing “climate-friendly cooling” could prevent over 460 billion tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions — equivalent to about eight years of global emissions at 2018 levels.
Three Paths to Sustainable Cooling
1) Innovation in Cooling Technologies
The industry has developed multiple technologies to reduce carbon footprints by replacing gases with climate-friendly alternatives:
- Liquid Cooling: Uses water or other coolants to absorb heat directly from servers. Liquid cooling also transfers heat more efficiently than air-based systems, further contributing to sustainability through reduced energy consumption.
- Immersion Cooling: Submerges servers in non-conductive cooling fluids, achieving higher cooling efficiency with minimal energy use.
- Free Cooling: Utilizes naturally cold outside air instead of energy-intensive cooling systems.
2) Cooling System Design
Cooling solutions incorporate sophisticated design elements that reduce energy consumption to allow more efficient and sustainable cooling:
- Hot/Cold Aisle Containment: Physically separates hot and cold air aisles to prevent air mixing and ensure uniform temperature distribution. The improved airflow management allows cooling systems to operate at lower speeds, significantly cutting energy usage.
- Modular Design: A flexible approach allowing individual cooling units to adapt to real-time demands. This minimizes unnecessary cooling, optimizes energy efficiency, and extends equipment lifespan.
3) Hardware & Software Engineering
Advancements in both hardware and software play a critical role in optimizing cooling efficiency and sustainability:
- Energy-Efficient Components: Modern cooling systems incorporate high-efficiency, variable-speed fans, pumps, and heat exchangers that operate at changing capacities and consume less power while maintaining optimal performance.
- AI-Powered Cooling Management: Advanced sensors and machine learning algorithms analyze cooling needs in real-time, automatically adjusting settings for optimal efficiency while maintaining required temperatures.
- Heat Recovery Mechanisms: Innovative cooling systems capture and repurpose excess heat, either redistributing it within facilities for heating purposes or converting it into usable energy, reducing overall waste.
AIRSYS’ Commitment to the Planet
Driven by our guiding motto, “Balance the Environment,” sustainability drives and shapes how we work, think, and design our organizational culture and cooling solutions. This drives our commitment to creating cooling solutions that deliver exceptional performance and prioritize Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles.
How Do We Implement Our Motto?
We Build Eco-Friendly Cooling Solutions
Our cooling solutions support sustainability in two key ways: directly, by using eco-friendly cooling practices, and indirectly, by improving energy efficiency to lower carbon footprints. This commitment is built into the design of our cooling systems across all product lines and industries we serve. For example:
- Optima2™: A modular cooling system with AI-driven self-diagnostics, achieving an outstanding Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) of under 1.1.
- LiquidRack™: Reduces liquid usage by 80% and recovers 100% of IT energy for reuse.
- Backpack™: Incorporates an energy recovery ventilator (ERV) to minimize energy waste.
We Educate for Sustainable Cooling
Beyond green innovation, we raise awareness of sustainable cooling through blog articles like The Link Between Global Warming Potential & Cooling Systems, The Role of Cooling in Green Data Centers, and Green Refrigerants for Green Cooling. Additionally, we ensure practical guidance with articles such as Eco-Friendly Cooling: A Guide for Telecom Operators, helping engineers and mission-critical facility managers take the first steps toward implementing greener cooling solutions in their environments.
We Comply with Sustainability Standards
To reinforce our commitment to sustainability, we adhere to internationally recognized environmental standards. Among them are the ISO 14001 Environmental Management System certification, RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances) compliance, and CE Certification for European safety, health, and environmental protection.
AIRSYS’ Environmental Promise
As we celebrate Earth Day, we reaffirm our dedication to creating a sustainable future. Our journey is about more than just developing cutting-edge cooling technologies — it’s about designing solutions that respect and protect our planet.
By continuously innovating, educating, and adhering to the highest environmental standards, we’re not just preparing for the future — we’re actively shaping it. Together, we can create a more sustainable world, one cooling solution at a time.
